Golf and Green Space Around Woking
Heathland golf courses and commons give Woking a surprising amount of open, green landscape.
For a busy commuter town, Woking is remarkably green. The area around it is classic Surrey heathland, and that landscape shapes both its parks and its golf.
Heathland golf
The Hook Heath area to the west of the town is home to established heathland golf, the sandy, heather-lined terrain that Surrey is known for among golfers. These courses sit within leafy surroundings only a short distance from the town centre.
Commons and open space
Woking is ringed by protected commons. Horsell Common, to the north, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest famous for its wildlife, heathland, Bronze Age burial mounds — and its role in The War of the Worlds. On the south side, Westfield Common offers ponds, a play area, and open grass popular with families and dog walkers.
Parks and the canal
Closer in, Woking Park provides formal leisure and green space, while the Basingstoke Canal towpath threads a green, traffic-free corridor right through the town, linking many of its neighbourhoods.
